Luton Town Hall

The main war memorial of Luton, located outside the Town Hall. The memorial built of Portland Stone was put up in 1922. It is is inscribed on four sides with the names of the 1286 dead of World War One. Later bronze panels commemorate the dead of the Second World War. The 8 feet high bronze statue of 'Peace' carries a myrtle branch held aloft in her right hand and an angel holding a wreath in her left hand. Read official list description.

Private Ted Parker

Ted Parker, the youngest son of Frank and Sarah Parker, a bootmaker and his wife from Luton who lived at 5 Tavistock. Brother to Frank and older brother to Emily.

He lived with his wife Lillian (nee Wagstaff), and died on home service in 1918. He is buried in Rothesay Road Cemetery.

Private George Arthur Meeks

George Arthur Meeks died at Wardown Park V.A.D. Hospital in November 1918, shortly after the armistice had been declared.

He was the son of Jesse and Dinah Meeks, a Cambridgeshire Gamekeeper and his wife.

He had 3 older brothers and 1 older sister, and at the beginning of the war he enlisted with the 9th Battalion The Bedfordshire Regiment, but was swiftly transferred to the 432nd Agricultural Coy. Labour Corps, service number 240216

He served with the Labour Corps until his death in 1918.

Private Joseph Herbert Impey

Joseph served with the South Staffordshire Regiment when he was killed in March 1918

His entry in the 1911 Census shows he was a father with young children, and lived in Pondwicks Street (now part of Power Court) Luton.

Acting Sergeant Leonard Euinton

Acting Sergeant 1st Bedfordshire Regiment.

Leonard Euinton was born on the 12 September 1888 at 2 Bolton Road, Luton and following school was employed as a Moulder by trade. He married Edith May Elston at St. Mathews Church, Hightown on the 29 October 1910 and resided at 57 Boyle Street, they had one child Ruby Olive who was born 1 February 1913.

Private Edward James Clarke

Private Edward James Clarke was the eldest son of Charles and Emma Clarke of The Bull public house at Offley. He had two younger daughters and three younger brothers, all of whom worked in and around the public house, and assisted with baking and selling bread as well as the other jobs associated with brewing and serving ale.

Private Joseph Summerfield

Private Joseph Summerfield was the only son of George and Rose Summerfield of Sundon, and brother to two younger sisters, Lizzie and Ethel. His father was a Labourer at a Lime Works, and Joseph followed in his fathers footsteps and became a labourer at the Cement Works when he was 14.

Joseph joined the 7th Bedfordshire Regiment on the outbreak of war, and served  2 years in France, without any leave, before he was killed on the 17th June.

Private Frederick Goodman

Private Frederick Goodman, was the third son of Herbert and Ann Goodman of Surrey Street Luton. Frederick was born in 1893 in Markyate where his father was an Asphalter (one who works with tar, probably working in laying road surfaces or sealing roofs).

Prior to enlisting in August 1916, Frederick worked as a labourer at the Diamond Foundry, alongside his two elder brothers Walter and Archie. He joined the Royal Sussex Regiment, and served until he was wounded on the 20th June 1917. He was taken to a casualty clearing station at Proven where he died soon after arrival.

Driver Percy Albert Horwood

Percy was the eldest of six children and his mother and father both worked in the hat trade. He did various jobs including cobbler, printers compositor and shop assistant. He married Jemima, "Minnie", in August 1913 and in 1915 they had a daughter, Marjorie. Percy's youngest brother Claude was born in 1911 so he had a brother who was very close in age to his daughter.
