Private Charles Henry Carrington

Charles Henry Carrington was born in Luton in 1875.

On 15th August 1894 he married Rose Ellen Mouse in Luton.

In 1911 they are living at 44 Lyndhurst Road. Charles, 36 is working as a straw hat dyer & 38 year old Rose Ellen is at home looking after their 4 daughters, Dorothy Margot 16, Phyllis Geraldine 15, Gwendoline 13 & 10 year old Leila Beryl.

Private Arthur Kirchin

Arthur Kirchin was born in Luton in October 1891.

In 1911 he is living at 6 Hitchin Road, he is 19 years old & has his own business as a Marine Store Dealer. He is living with his family,  father Frederick 46 & mother Rose 44,  have their own business as fishmongers & fruittiers, sister Lillie 26, is a straw hat finisher & his 18 year old brother Albert is a fishmonger.

He married Hettie Short on 24th June 1914 in Luton.

Albert joined the Queens Royal West Surrey Regiment.

Private William Fensome

William Fensome was born on 23rd January 1883 in Luton to Henry & Matilda.

In 1900 William joined the 3rd Battalion Bedfordshire Regiment. He is described on his service record as 5ft 4 inches tall with a fresh complexion, hazel eyes & brown hair. He has many scars on his body including burns to his chest. He was working as a moulder in an iron factory & living at 14 Round Green. He spent 6 years with the Bedfordshire Regiment.

On 13th April 1903 William married Rose Poulton.  

Private Horace Battams

Horace Battams was born in Luton in 1895.

In 1911 he was 16 years old, working as a builder's labourer & living with his family at 51 Hartley Road, Luton. His father William was a straw plait bleacher. He was the eldest of 7 children. Arthur 12, Winifred 10 & 8 year old Percy were at school & Lilley 6, Willie 4, & 1 year old John were at home with their mother Agnes.

Private Frederick Rae

Frederick Rae was born on 9th February 1879 in Luton to Charles & Sophia.

He married Sarah Oakley in January 1900 & in 1911 he is working as a straw hat blocker & living at 51 Duke Street, Luton with their 2 sons Frederick Thomas, 10 & Arthur Charles aged 7.

He died of wounds 2 October 1918 & is buried in the cemetery on Crawley Green Road, Luton

Private John Gazeley

John Gazeley was born in Luton in 1875.

In 1891 he is 17 years old & is working as an errand boy. He is living at 17 Taylor Street with his family. His father Albert 48, & 21 year old brother Frederick are working as agricultural labourers. His mother Mary Ann, 38 is at home looking after his younger siblings, Ada 13, Sarah 11, Sophia 7, Joseph 4 & 2 year old Rosey.

Private James Edward Genn

James Edward Genn was born in Boughton, Nonchelsea in Kent in 1881 to James Billet Genn & Eliza, nee Potter.

 

In 1901 he 20 years old & is living in Kent with his mother, father, 5 brothers & 1 sister. His widowed grandmother, Lucy Potter, is also living with them. He is working as a bricklayer's labourer, the same occupation as his father. His 16 year old brother Frederick is a farm labourer.
