Richard Newins was born in April 1878.

He joined the Army Service Corps on 28th April 1915 in London & was shortly posted to France.

It was whilst serving in France from 5th May 1915 to 27th December 1917 that he was admitted to the 35th General Hospital found to be suffering from pain attributed to  muscular atrophy in his shoulder. He was sent to England for treatment, which included massage, but was discharged from the No 6 Southern General Hospital in Portsmouth as unfit for war service. His disability was caused by the laborious work he had undergone whilst performing his war duties at the docks.

Richard died on 18th November 1918, just 8 days after the Armistice. He is buried in the cemetery on Crawley Green Road.
