Private Thomas Eames

Thomas Eames was born in Sundon, Bedfordshire in 1889 to John & Emma.

In 1911 Thomas is 23 years old & working as a farm labourer. His brother Arthur, 28 & also a farm labourer is now head of the household as both their parents have died. Living in Sundon with them are sister Annie, 30, housekeeper to her brothers & their 4 year old niece Minnie Blackaby.

Thomas joined the Bedfordshire Regiment on the outbreak of war & was sent to France. In November 1916 Thomas was injured in the arm & sent home where he had his arm amputated just above the elbow.

Lance Corporal Rowland Abbott

Lance Corporal Rowland Abbott served in 1/5th Btn of the Bedfordshire Regiment.

Before the outbreak of war the father of 6 was a straw hat blocker & was living with his wife Lizzie Louise and children at 27 May Street.

He was fighting in Gallipoli when he was wounded. He later died of his wounds on 21st August 1915. His final resting place is unknown, but he is remembered on the Helles Memorial panel 54 & 218

 

Private Arthur Horsler

Arthur was the fourth son of George and Ann Horsler of Great Bramingham who had seven sons serving on the Western Front. Three brothers, including Arthur, were killed and two were wounded.

Arthur joined the army in February 1917 and served in France and Italy with the 20th Manchesters. He returned to France in July 1918 and was killed on 4th October 1918 whilst acting as a stretcher bearer. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Vis en Artois memorial. His name also appears on the Sundon Village memorial in Bedfordshire.

Private Edward Warner V.C.

Edward was born 18th November 1883, at St Albans in Hertfordshire. Although his father had previously been married to Ann Lowe, it appears that Edward was the only son of Mark and Charlotte Warner. Mark was a Platelayer Foreman on the Railways who was born in Wheathampstead around 1832 and his mother Charlotte (formerly Barber) was from London, being born around 1841.
