Pte Frederick John Moorhead, 50151, 11th Battalion Middlesex Regiment, was killed in action near Arras on May 4th, 1917.

Second Lieut Guy Chipperfield, in charge of his her husband's platoon, wrote in a letter to widow Eleanor that Pte Moorhead was killed by a shell while on a night carrying party. "He was unfortunately buried by the shell, and will probably be reported 'Missing, believe killed' but there is, I fear, no doubt as to his fate."

Pte Moorhead, who formerly worked in the straw trade, was born in Newtownbarry, Co. Wexford, Ireland, in around 1884. In 1909 he married Luton girl Eleanor Gardner in Luton and lived at 29 Chobham Street.

He joined up with the Royal Fusiliers under the Derby scheme a year before his death, and was later transferred to the Middlesex Regiment. He had seen eight months' fighting in France.

When she received the letter about his death, Eleanor had returned to live with her parents at 25 Stockwood Crescent.
