Battlefield photo finds its way home

Evelyn Chamberlain

Who is she? asked The Luton News in its December 21st, 1916, edition. This picture of a child was picked up in some old buildings near the firing line on a battlefield in France.

The only clue was the name of a Luton photographer at the bottom of the picture. And fortunately it was found by Sgt R. Wagg, of the Notts and Derby Regiment, who had been billeted in Luton when the North Midland Division trained here early in the war.

He passed the photo on in a letter to Mr John Allin, of 2 Lyndhurst Road, Luton, with whom the sergeant had been billeted. Mr Allin in turn asked the newspaper to print the picture in the hope of finding the owner.

And it worked. On the evening of publication, the now 13-year-old Evelyn Chamberlain, of 46 Dale Road, Luton, visited Mr Allin to reclaim her photo.

The Luton News rounded off the story, but not until its edition of January 4th, 1917. It was not explained how the photograph got to France, however, or what had happened to whoever lost it.
