Pte Albert Edgar Saunders, 235327, 18th Battalion The King's (Liverpool Regiment), died in King George's Hospital, London, on November 24th, 1918, as a result of wounds sustained at Ypres on April 29th, 1918. A gunshot wound in the neck had caused paralysis of his body and legs, and he had been in the London hospital since early May. He was discharged as unfit for service in August 1918.
Albert was the youngest son of the last George Saunders, of 167 High Town Road, Luton, and husband of Ellen, of 2 Wood Street, Luton. He had married Ellen Pestell at Luton Parish Church on December 26th, 1910. Daughter Olive May was born in April 1916.
He had attended St Matthew's School in High Town and later worked as a hat blocker for manufacturer Amos Hudson, of Upper George Street, Luton, before enlisting in the 2/5th Yorkshire Regiment (4486) in June 1916 and later being transferred to the Liverpool Regiment. He was also a member of Luton Liberal Club.
The funeral took place at the Church Cemetery, Crawley Green Road, on November 30th, 1918. Albert is commemorated on the Luton Roll of Honour/War Memorial and in the Book of Life compiled at Luton Parish Church.
