Pte Sidney Charles Peters, 10576, 'A' Company, 1/2nd London Regiment Royal Fusiliers, was captured by the Germans at Polygon Wood, near Ypres in Belgium, on August 16th, 1917. He was a prisoner of war at Dulmen, Westphalia, Germany, but survived the war and was repatriated.
The son of Albert and Agnes Peters, of 74 Old Bedford Road, Luton, Sidney had joined the Colours soon after the outbreak of war. He was invalided home after being wounded at Combles in France in 1916, but drafted out to the Front again in May 1917. Before departing he married Beatrice Sarah Bartholomew by licence at St Matthew's Church, Luton, on May 8th, 1917.
He was reported missing after August 16th and was later confirmed to be a PoW.
Sidney died in Luton on December 9th, 1974, at the age of 77. For much of his married life he had lived with Beatrice at 15 Kingston Road, Luton, but had lived with Beatrice at Newmarket for a while after the war. Daughter Olga was born at Newmarket in 1925.
