The details in the National Roll (usually submitted by the family) are as follows: "Volunteering at the commencement of hostilities he was drafted to the Western Front in the same year, and was engaged on important transport duties at Ypres, the Somme and Arras. In 1917 he was sent to Salonika, and was present at various engagements on the Balkan front including the Advance on Vardar. Finally he proceeded to Russia where he rendered excellent service at Murmansk until June 1919 when he returned home and was demobilised."
