Bertie Frederick Eales was born in Luton in 1886. Eldest child of 6 born to Edwin & Kate.
In early 1911 26 year old Bertie married Ellen Emma Shaw & at the time of the census in April that year they had set up home together at 104 Bury Park Road. Both are working in the hat trade, Bertie is a warehouseman & Ellen in a straw hat finisher.
In 1912 their son Bertram Reginald was born, but sadly on 25th July 1915 he died.
Bertie enlisted into the Royal Field Artillery, where he was part of B Battery 246th Brigade. The brigade was sent to France where they saw much action. In May 1915 they fought in the Battle of Aubers Ridge. In 1916 they were in action in the Battles of The Somme. In 1917 they were in operations on the Flanders coastline & they fought in the Third Battle of Ypres. In 1918 they were in action in The Battles of the Lys, The Pursuit to The Selle & The Final Advance in Picardy. It was in the final stages of the war that Bertie was killed in action on 14th October 1918.
Bertie is buried in the Wellington Cemetery in Rieux-En-Cambresis in northern France.
He is also remembered on his son's grave in the cemetery on Crawley Green Road.
