The National Roll (mostly submitted by families) describes his service as follows: He joined in November 1916 and was engaged on special duties as a baker with his unit at various home stations. He was unable to obtain his transfer to a theatre of war until after the signing of the Armistice. He was then sent to Germany with the Army of Occupation and served at Cologne until demobilised in 1919 after returning to England.

Whilst on the Western Front he fought in many battles including those of Arras, Cambrai, St Quentin, the Somme and the allied advance into Germany. He returned home after the cessation of hostilities and was demobilised in January 1919 and hold the General Service and Victory Medals.

The National Roll (mostly submitted by families) describes his service as follows: Volunteering in August 1914 he was drafted to France at the conclusion of his training and during his service in France fought at Ypres, Loos, Arras and Cambrai and was wounded. He holds the 1914 Star, and the General Service and Victory Medals and was demobilised in 1919.
