Saving Private Brightman

I spotted an article in today's Times newspaper which tells a story of a soldier who was brought home from the First World War after the death of his four brothers. The newspaper likened it to the film, Saving Private Ryan. We have a similar story here on Great War Stories about the Brightman family.

In this true story the fifth son was already serving at home in the Labour Corps when the fourth brother died. But as the Luton News reported in January 1920, the family believed that a letter from the Vicar of Streatley prevented him from being returned overseas and saved him from a similar fate to his brothers.

The story is even more tragic when you read in the same article that in a neighbouring cottage the Horsler family lost three of their seven sons and two came home wounded. As the headline says the War had "a terrible toll" on these two homes in the small village of Great Bramingham.
