On-going research into details of the 1,284 men commemorated on the Luton Roll of Honour has raised a couple of question marks so far. It would appear that one man is commemorated twice and two men are represented as one person.
The names Pte Frederick John East and Pte Frederick Ford seem to relate to the same man as they have the same regimental details. East was the surname with which the man's birth was registered and he served, while Ford is a later married surname of his mother.
In the case of Herbert Smith it seems details of two men have been merged. One was a lance corporal in the Royal Fusiliers, a son of Joseph and Jane Smith, with an address at 58 New Street, Luton. The other was a private in the Bedfordshire regiment who was born in Luton, son of Arthur and Rebecca Smith, but lived in Flitwick and is recorded on the Flitwick War Memorial.
The Luton Roll of Honour record in the latter case reads: 1055 SMITH Herbert, 58 New Town Street, Luton, 2nd Beds, Pte17938.
Pte Herbert Smith died on the battlefield on September 25th, 1915, while L-Cpl Herbert Smith died of wounds on August 2nd, 1917.
