No Christmas leave for Beds Yeomanry

A letter signed "Two High Town Boys with A Squadron, Beds Yeomanry, at Hatfield Peverel, Essex," revealed how the they had spent Christmas.

It read: "As no doubt you know, Christmas leave was cancelled at the last moment for officers and men, which of course was a great disappointment to all, but in the same spirit as they take everything else that comes along, they made the best of it.

"The officers joined in everything with the men and were 'one of us'. They gave us such a splendid time that we are sure will never be forgotten by anyone who was fortunate enough to be here. On Christmas night we were entertained to dinner by the officers, and on Boxing night to a smoking concert. In addition to London artistes whom the officers had engaged, we had a ready supply of talent among the officers and men of the Beds Yeomanry, but the hit of the evening was a song by our gallant Major (S. J. Green) which simply brought down the house.

"We are lucky to have such a splendid leader, and we are quite sure that Luton will one day be proud of one of its sons. We are all proud of him, and when the time comes will follow him anywhere. It will not be his fault if we are not capable of doing our little bit.

"We should like to add in conclusion that we are all very healthy, with enormous appetites, cheerful and very fit, and are impatiently waiting to go and lend a hand to the gallant lads who have so nobly upheld the honour of the county regiment."
