The National Roll (mostly submitted by families) describes his service as follows: He joined in January 1917 and in the following April was drafted to the Western Front where he was in action at Ypres and the Somme and was twice wounded and gassed. He was invalided to hospital in England but returning to France in June 1918 served in the Cambrai sector. After the termination of hostilities he proceeded to Germany with the Army of Occupation and served on the Rhine until March 1919 when he returned home and was demobilised, holding the General Service and Victory Medals.
