The National Roll (mostly submitted by families) describes his service as follows: Bedfordshire Regiment and Labour Corps; He joined in July 1916 and in the following December was drafted to the Western Front. There he was engaged in important duties in connection with the upkeep of roads in the Somme, Arras, Cambrai and Marne areas and in subsequent engagements until the cessation of hostilities. He was demobilised after his return to England in March 1919 and holds the General Service and Victory Medals.
