Pte Frederick Allen, 20981, 10th Border Regiment, was killed in action on the Somme on July 30th, 1916. He was aged 34 and he and some chums had been fighting with the 16th Battalion Manchester Regiment for just a few days before his death.

Born in Luton in 1882, he was the only son of Arthur and Julia Allen, of 47 Chase Street, Luton. He had originally joined the Bedfords at Ampthill and was a special reservist. But for the commencement of the war he would have completed his Army service.

Pte Cyril Snoxell, 11370, 1st Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regiment), died of pneumonia at the 6th Stationary Hospital, Le Havre in France, on March 23rd, 1916. He was aged 23.

He was the son of William and Susan Snoxell, of 31 Chase Street, Luton, and shortly before his death had been home on leave.

Pte Snoxell, who would have been in the Sherwoods for six years in June 1916, was stationed in India when war broke out. His battalion was ordered home and immediately went to France, where Pte Snoxell took part in many engagements.

L-Cpl Rowland Abbott, 4025, 1/5th Bedfords, died on August 21st, 1915, from wounds sustained at Gallipoli. Newspaper reports said he was aged 44.

On August 17th he wrote to his wife Lizzie Louisa at 77 Chase Street, Luton, saying he was quite well and that the regiment was gaining ground.

L-Cpl Abbott was born in Luton, the son of John William and Martha, who married in 1864. John William died in the early months of 1875, two years after Rowland was born. In 1881, Martha and her four children were living at 2 Brache Street, Luton, and later lived in Essex Street.

Pte James Brown, 3/6100, 1st Battalion, Beds Regt, was posted missing, believe killed in action, on November 5th, 1914. He was born in Lilley in 1889 and was living at 5 Chase Street, Luton, in 1911.

In the 1891 Census he was listed as one of seven children of farm labourer George Brown and his wife Elizabeth, a straw plaiter.
