LUTON SAPPER DIES IN AFRICA.
The expectations of Sapper Fred Clark that he would shortly return home from German East Africa, where he had been serving under General Smuts, have unhappily not materialised. He now lies under the soil of the captured territory, for his wife, who resides at 152, Leagrave Road, has been officially notified that her husband has died from neuritis, the effect of the climate.
Sapper Clark was formerly employed by Mr. Frank Moody, the engineer, of Chapel street, and he joined the E.A.R.E, on November 19th, 1914. In the following March he went out to the Dardanelles, and there he sustained a bullet wound in the leg, and was stricken with dysentery, and came home to England in July. After treatment in various hospitals he went out to German East Africa on Feb. 5th, 1916, and he was at Dodorna, some few weeks ago. The notification of his death states that he died at a place not named.' 'He' was 33 and leaves a widow and three young children.
