Pte Alfred Bent, 43014, 6th Battalion Northamptonshire Regiment, died of wounds on March 14th, 1917, at the No 55 Field Ambulance Station in France. He was aged 31 and single.
He had enlisted in March 1916 and went to the Front in July. Prior to joining up he worked as a traveller.
A brief report of his death in the Saturday Telegraph said Mrs Bent, of 18 Bolton Road, Luton had received official notification of her son's death, although his military records say it was Mrs Alice Custance, a dependant who was not his mother and not a known relation, living at 18 Bolton Road (his address on the Luton Roll of Honour). It seems he had a sister, Lavinia Bent, living in Langley Place, Luton.
In the 1901 Census his late father, Eli Charles Bent, described himself as a widower. His wife, Yorkshire-born Lavinia, had died in Luton in 1890 at the age of 33.
