Gunner

Royal Field Artillery Cap BadgeGunner ("Gnr") is a rank equivalent to private in the British Army Royal Artillery and the artillery corps of other Commonwealth armies. The next highest rank is usually lance-bombardier, although in the Royal Canadian Artillery it is bombardier.

The National Roll (mostly submitted by families) describes his service as follows: He joined in October 1916 and in the following February was sent to France. He did excellent work as a Gunner in various engagements on the Somme but owing to illness contracted whilst on active service he was invalided home in November 1917. He was finally demobilised in February 1919 and holds the General Service and Victory Medals.
