Pte Murray Walter Harrison, 2797, 2nd Battalion East Surrey Regiment, was killed in action on April 11th, 1915, about five weeks after going into the firing line. He was aged 22.
The son of Mr and Mrs James Harrison, of 46 Maple Road, Luton, he had enlisted in September 1914 and went to the front during the first week in March. Before the war he had been employed by a Bedford firm.
In his last letter to his mother he wrote: "I know you feel it hard when you know I am out here, but you can say your sons were not afraid to do their bit. The country here is in an awful state, and if it had not been for boys like us England would have been the same. So don't worry about me, I am all right."
Pte Harrison's brother, James Richard, was serving in the 1/2nd Field Company, East Anglian Division Royal Engineers, awaiting the call to go abroad.
