Private Ernest Rodell

Pte Ernest Rodell, 14864, 13th Battalion Royal Sussex Regiment, died at Gheluvelt, near Ypres, on October 18th, 1917, from wounds sustained in action. He was aged 23, single and had lived with his parents at 3 Surrey Street, Luton.

One of his chums wrote to Pte Rodell's sister stating that he was wounded on October 17th and died like a hero, happy and conscious to the last. Only a few minutes before he died he asked his chums to shake hands with him. "They did so, and were with him to the last."

Private Frederick Goodman

Pte Frederick Goodman, 14840, 13th Battalion Royal Sussex Regiment, died on June 20th, 1917, shortly after admission to a casualty clearing station with battlefield wounds. He was aged 22.

He enlisted soon after the outbreak of war and had been in France only 11 months when the news reached his mother Annie Goodman (nee Saunders) and grandmother, who were living at 9 Surrey Street, Luton. He had a brother, Sidney John, and sister, Clara Anne, living at 9 Wenlock Street, at the time.

Private Claude Ernest Pratt

Pte Claude Ernest Pratt, 14855, 13th Battalion Royal Sussex Regiment, died in a casualty clearing station on June 9th, 1917, from abdomen wounds sustained earlier in the day in the Messines fighting.

A hospital chaplain wrote to parent James Albon and Ellen Louise Pratt at 21 Peach Street, Luton, with the news. He said he had laid their son to rest with several others on June 10th in a cemetery surrounded by hops and growing corn some miles behind the lines - a very peaceful spot.

Private John William Martin

 

Pte John William Martin, G/14844, machine gun section, 13th Battalion Royal Sussex regiment, was killed in action on the Somme on October 21st, 1916. He was aged 18.

As a member of the Beds Territorial Force he was mobilised at the outbreak of war and subsequently transferred to the Royal Sussex Regiment. He had been at the Front since August 1916. Before the war he was worked for painter and house decorator Frederick Price, of Albion Road, Luton.

Parents Francis Joseph and Alice Susannah Martin lived at 25 Queen Street, Luton, at the time of their son's death.
