Samuel's Army Service Record can be found at the National Archives. It shows that he was a farm labourer before the war, son of Joseph Fensome of Upper Woodside. He enlisted in the Bedfordshire Regiment in February 1916 aged 36 years, 11 months and in March 1917 was sent to France with the Labour Corps.

The National Roll (mostly submitted by families) describes his service as follows: 11th Suffolk Regiment; He joined in June 1916 and later in the same year was drafted to the Western Front. He took part in many great engagements including those of Arras, Cambrai and Amiens and was twice wounded and gassed. He was demobilised in September 1919 after his return to England and he holds the General Service and Victory Medals.

Whilst in this theatre of war he served in the General Offensive of the Allies on the Doiran Front and in the Advance on Vardar. After the cessation of hostilities he remained overseas until November 1919 when he returned home and was demobilised holding the General Service and Victory Medals.

He did excellent work as a Gunner in various engagements on the Somme but owing to illness contracted whilst on active service he was invalided home in November 1917. He was demobilised in March 1919 after his return home and holds the General service and Victory Medals.

The National Roll (mostly submitted by families) describes his service as follows: He joined in February 1916 and in the following July was drafted to France where he fought in the Battles of the Somme, Arras and Ypres and was killed in action on 10th August 1917. He was entitled to the General Service and Victory Medals.

The Commonwealth War Graves records show that Charles was the son of Thomas and Ellen Billington of Sundon, Bedfordshire.

He was engaged on patrolling duties in the North Sea, Persian Gulf, Indian Ocean, Red Sea, and Mediterranean and took part in the Battle of Jutland. After returning home he was demobilised in March 1919 holding the 1914-15 Star, General Service and Victory Medals.
