The National Roll (mostly submitted by families) describes his service as follows: Bedfordshire Regiment and Prince of Wales Leinster Regiment. Volunteering in 1914 he was sent to the Western Front in August of the following year and fought at the battles of Ypres, Somme and Arras and was wounded in July 1916. He was invalided to hospital in England and on recovery he returned to the front lines and was in action throughout the Retreat and Advance of 1918. He was demobilised in February 1919 and holds the 1914-15 Stra and the General service and Victory Medals.
