Pte Gerald Edward Hills, 30799, 7th Battalion Bedfordshire Regiment, was reported missing in action in Belgium on July 20th, 1917. It was not until the following October that his widow, Edith, at Breachwood Green was officially notified that he was killed on that date, but there was no further information about how he met his death.
Prior to joining up in May 1916, Gerald Hill was employed by the Prudential Insurance Co as an agent. He was then living in Chapel Road, Breachwood Green, with Edith, whom he married in July 1909. They had one child, Margery Edith, born in November 1910.
He was the son of Albert and Elizabeth Hills, of Breachwood Green, and born in 1886. Following his death, Edith spent most of her post-war years living in Dunstable. She died in 1982 at the at of 93.
In the 1911 Census Gerald was described as a brickmaker journeyman.
