The National Roll (mostly submitted by families) describes his service as follows: After volunteering in September 1914 he saw service both in France and at the Dardanelles, rendering excellent service with his unit in many engagements. On the Western Front he took part in much heavy fighting including the Battles of the Somme, Arras and Ypres and was taken prisoner at the battle of the Marne. On his return home he was demobilised in March 1919 and holds the General Service and Victory Medals.
