The National Roll (mostly submitted by families) describes his service as follows: He was serving in the Royal Navy when war broke out having joined in January 1909 and aboard HMS Indomitable was engaged on important duties in the Mediterranean Sea and Indian Ocean. His ship later took part in the operations in the Dardanelles, and was also in action in the battles of Heligoland Blight and Jutland and other encounters with the German fleet. He was demobilised in January 1920 and holds the 1914-15 Star and the General Service and Victory Medals.
