John William Engeldow was born in July 1888 in Marylebone, London to Frederick Ross & Ruth Elizabeth.

In 1911 John is 22 years old & working as a clerk & living at 38 Gossoms End, Berkhamstead, Hertfordshire with his widowed mother & 2 of his 3 siblings. His sister Margaret Elizabeth, 17 is a domestic servant & his 21 year old brother George Robert is working as a whitesmith, this is similar to a blacksmith, but it is someone who makes items out of tin. They also have a boarder living with them, Albert John Dell who is 19 & working as a compositor at a printing works.

In July 1915 John married Ethel Maud Wilder in Luton & in March 1916 their son William George Verdun was born.

John had joined the Royal Army Service Corps. He was part of the Horse Transportation Railhead Supply Detachment. Although the war had become mechanised, horses, mules & donkeys were greatly relied on to transport guns, ammunition, supplies & men anywhere where they were needed.

He was Mentioned in Despatches.

John survived the war but died of Phthisis (Tuberculosis) on 27th March 1920. He is buried in the cemetery on Crawley Green Road, Luton.
