Cpl Henry Smart

 

Cpl Henry George Smart, 7018, 1st Battalion North Staffordshire Regiment, was killed in action near Armentieres on March 21st, 1915. He was aged 28.

But for the outbreak of war his time as a reservist would have expired in November 1914. While in the Army he had served eight years in India.

He was the second son of Mr and Mrs Henry Smart, of 92 Bury Park Road, Luton, to be killed in action. His younger brother Pte Albert Smart, aged 22, 9352, 2nd Battalion Bedfordshire Regiment, died on October 31st, 1914, near Festubert. A third son was a sergeant in the 5th Bedfords.

Prior to the war Cpl Smart worked for bleacher and dyer Mr J. L. Frenay-Pirotte in Leagrave Road, for whom his father had also worked for 28 years.
