Luton Police Force promotions

Inspector Herbert Hunt (pictured) was promoted by Luton Watch Committee from the rank of sergeant in March 1919 as part of Police Force restructuring following the retirement of Inspector Walter James Hagley, 'father' of the Force.

Police Insp Herbert HuntA Hampshire man, he was appointed a constable at Luton on May 15th, 1900, and was promoted to sergeant on November 1st, 1909.

He held the Merit Badge from January 22nd, 1902, when it was awarded to him for detecting a case of housebreaking at Ashton Road. One of the men concerned fired a revolver when pursued, but the bullet fortunately missed. Although the gunman escaped capture, the then Pc Hunt managed to recover a large amount of stolen property.

In June 1918, the then Sgt Hunt was again specially commended and awarded a gratuity by the Watch Committee in a case in which some men were charged with breaking into the Palace Theatre. The proprietors of the theatre also made a presentation to him.

Along with Herbert Hunt, three promotions to sergeant were made. Warrant Sgt Charles Speight had joined the Luton force on October 6th, 1905; Police Clerk Sgt Russell Hencher joined on February 27, 1902; and Hertfordshire man Sgt Henry Parsons joined on February 14th, 1902. All had distinguished records.
